“As you well know what you do day in and day out is caring and comforting the patient and family. You all did just that with a great deal of kindness and sincerity. For that our family thanks you to no end.”

Becoming A Hospice 'Patient Care' Volunteer
Volunteers are an integral part of hospice. Without volunteers, most hospices would not be able to carry out their mission. Many people choose to volunteer because of the positive previous experience of a family member or friend. Volunteers not only provide valuable services, but provide needed warmth, companionship, friendship and support to patients and their caregivers.
The following topics are covered:
| History & Philosophy of Hospice | What to Do in Emergencies |
| Interdisciplinary Approach to Care | Family Dynamics |
| Eligibility for Services | Spiritual Care |
| Concepts of Death & Dying | Grief & Bereavement |
| Patient and Family Care | Role of the Volunteer |
| Palliative Care | Patient Comfort Measures |
| Home, Facility and Inpatient Care | Universal Precautions |
| Signs & Symptoms of Death | General Safety Measures |
How do I become a Volunteer?
Individuals who have time to share are invited to attend the Southern Tier Hospice & Palliative Care training and learn the hospice story. No experience is required, just an interest in helping others. There is no commitment to become a hospice volunteer by attending the training. Those who have recently lost a loved one are asked to wait a year before joining the patient-care volunteer team. In addition to working with patients and families, STHPC volunteers also provide support in the office, with the Fundraising Committee and with community education.
A new approach to receiving the traditional classroom Volunteer training is available! A 3- DVD series Home Study Course is a great option for active or working people who desire becoming a Hospice Volunteer. Home study is supplemented by individual training in areas particular to our Hospice Organization.
| Volunteers are a special group of people. They volunteer their time, their hands and a warm heart. They expect nothing in return other than knowing they helped another human being. Listening is the greatest skill volunteers can offer to patients and families. Being there when called upon creates a memorable relationship. Outstanding volunteers are honored each year at the Annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner. |
