Southern Tier Hospice Builds School Bereavement Program
Corning: Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care is announcing the beta testing for its preschool – grade 12 school bereavement program for schools in Chemung, Steuben and Schuyler Counties. The program was inspired after working with Broadway Middle School in Elmira last Spring and materials are being developed to enhance the program and bring to other schools across the three county STHPC service area.
The school bereavement program will create a system to identify and support bereaved students and to provide training for the school staff and faculty members for schools in the three-county service area. Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care (STHPC) staff will also be a permanent resource to the schools to assist in referrals, continuing the training program and assist in identifying ways to fill unanticipated needs that might be brought forward in the community.
The program will allow STHPC staff to increase each school’s ability to identify and support daily needs while having the proper resources to outsource what they cannot handle internally. “The Hospice staff is working with the Chemung County Suicide Prevention Program and key individuals in the community to attempt to incorporate preventative interventions and identification of needs in the areas of grief and suicide,” added Andrea Barber, Bereavement and Social Work Specialist from Southern Tier Hospice and Palliative Care.
Kimberly Webster, School Counselor from Broadway Middle School stated, “It’s inevitable that students throughout the year may experience or be affected by a loss. That loss may be a death of a loved one, divorce, friendship, moving or even a new job. Therefore, it’s important for us to have professionals available in our schools to help identify these students and provide them the support to get through their process of grief. After doing a needs assessment with students and realizing the level of need in this area, Hospice came to Broadway Middle School to provide group counseling focusing on coping skills, strategies and tools relating to overcoming loss. I cannot say enough about the impact Southern tier Hospice had in our building and the rapport they built with our students and staff.”
Any schools that are interested in becoming part of this program should contact Andrea Barber (607) 962-3100 or email her at abarber@sthospice.org
